II.

Holed up in the captain’s cabin for days on end, Luci was getting restless. Patience had never been her strong point, no matter how many years she’d walked the Earth. She liked to keep busy, but there were only so many things one could do on a galleon ship unless it involved helping man the ship—which Luci had no intention of doing. The herbs had run out, and so had her pastries, although now that the ship had gathered speed her seasickness had abated sufficiently to make way for boredom.

She stretched and looked out of the tiny, blurry window. It was another blazingly hot day, making the sea glimmer a deep azure. It reminded her of her son’s eyes, not that she’d ever got close enough to stare into them properly. In the distance, where the sea was shallower or met a reef, the colours melted into a deep turquoise with patches of jade. Gabriel. Now, those eyes Luci had got close enough to gaze into and she missed them. She often wondered what the archangel would do if he knew she were alive. Would he be happy, or had his allegiances moved over to Mikhael? Surely not. Was her dearest friend also friends with her son? She hoped so.

Fresh air and wind in her hair—that was what she needed.

The entire crew had been charmed into believing she was invisible, so Luci was free to walk about in whatever state she wished. Even if she were naked there would be no repercussions—but she chose to stay dressed. Not in her underskirt and tunic though—they were rank with stale sweat. She’d have to find something else to wear. Using the jug of water and basin in the corner, she freshened up, then turned her attention to the captain’s wardrobe, because there was no way she was going to put her itchy, restrictive, and ridiculously hot dress back on.

Captain Roberts had plenty of outfits to choose from and Luci idly wondered what he was wearing right now, seeing as she’d forbidden him to enter his own quarters. She slipped on one of his frilly white shirts and a pair of loose cotton slacks that nearly reached her ankles, then secured the two in place with a thick brown belt around her middle. She still needed something to tie her hair back with.

Making her way to the desk she moved piles of paper and rolled up maps aside, searching for a piece of string or a ribbon. Pushing her hand to the back of one of the drawers, instead of finding some twine she felt a small metal lever. Ah. She’d seen these desks before, along with their hidden compartments. Was this what that rugged man, Lorenzo, had been searching for before she’d told him to forget she existed? She pressed the lever and a section at the front of the desk sprung open, revealing a hidden compartment. It was just big enough to fit her hand into. Reaching inside she pulled out a small drawstring leather pouch and emptied the contents into the palm of her hand.
